Hi everyone, my name is Lia McKenna. I am currently a senior here at UAlbany, with the blessing and curse of being born and raised here in the 518. I major in Communications, with a minor in business. Post-undergraduate, I am hoping to pursue something in marketing or media, as social media tends to be one of my strong suits. Without shame, I am obsessed with social media. I believe, contrary to popular opinion, that social media is one of the most helpful tools if you use it correctly.
Having attended Catholic schools until high school, being conservative was in my blood, and when I got to high school, I was clueless. I was not exactly used to seeing diverse groups of people, or to expressing myself in different ways. Once I got to UAlbany, I realized how much being in a public high school helped me adjust. I chose UAlbany for a few reasons that were not the best, in retrospect, but it ended up being everything I needed. I chose the school to secure a relationship I was in, turns out that did not work out. I thought about transferring because I was from the Albany area, but I made a huge group of friends that made staying here the best four years. In the end, it was the way that I had envisioned college.
UAlbany has provided me with amazing friends, memories that will never die, and a very, unstable bank account. The concrete jungle, as it is described, is without a doubt very windy, and cold, but there are always new people at every turn, and with my dream of living in New York City, it’s like a mini one. My biggest mantra, is I believe that everything is going to happen to you: the good, bad, and the ugly. The biggest thing is that you have to learn to balance yourself and find leg room even when you’re in a tight space in life. The things that happen to you will make the good times better, and the bad times easier to understand.
