If there is anything a Dane is good at, it’s overcoming obstacles. Here at the University at Albany, people of all different ages and background attend school in hopes of making their goals become reality. However, there are many problems that may keep us from successfully getting on the stepping stones to this path. Whether it may be financial issues, previous academic records issues, personal life experiences or parental issues Danes still manage to be here. Some of these students are thriving in their new environment and some may be drowning in their problems but despite all that we are all still here and our trying our best. When things seem impossible remember that there is always an alternative way to make things fall into their right place. Here are a few tips to help you stay focused!
Be true to yourself.
Many student struggle with family issues when they go off to college and sometimes parents don’t support what one chooses to study/do. When this time comes remember to be true to yourself and to do what makes you happy and successful in the long run because its your life.
Talk to your advisors!
They are there to help you figure things out and support your decisions in the best way possible. They also guide you towards the right decisions by connecting you with others, getting you into the right classes and will tell you when your classes/credits are getting out of hand! If you are not comfortable with your advisor then talk to your peers and loved ones, usually they make one feel better about difficult times in your life.
Take things one step at a time.
I understand that some people want to do things all at once and get stressed out when everything seems to come crashing down all at once but don’t overwhelm yourself. Remember that can handle anything that gets thrown your way and that you have to keep on moving to reach your goals, graduate college, get that dream job and make that dream income! Allow yourself to take things one step at a time and plan accordingly. Manage your time wisely and everything that needed to get done will be done.
Take a step back, Breathe!
When financial issues are concerning you or all the work you need to do is piling up and you don’t what to do. Take a step back, breathe, analyze yourself and the situation from different perspective and then do. Consider applying for scholarships and grants to pay off school and to minimize the amount of student loans you take out. Or perhaps consider the implications of getting a job and how that might fit into your schedule. Sometimes we get too anxious and too stressed to do anything proactive, in this case, take another step back and just relax for a bit. Take a nap, go grub lunch with a friend, call someone you love talking to, go to someone for support and just hang out for a bit. Be careful you don’t take too long of a break, just one that will allow your mind to focus on something less strenuous for a while. Then when your mind and body is sound, return to your work and you’ll see things differently.
Remember that things happen for a reason
Lastly, when you have tried your best at something and it doesn’t come out the way you wanted it to, remember that things happen for a reason. Personally, I get a bit defensive and annoyed when people say this to me because I think “Well what do you know?” and that’s okay but, it is a true saying and it is possible that things just weren’t meant to be. So I take that with a grain of salt and move forward to an even better endeavor hoping that it’ll be successful. Try not worry and repeat after me, I will be successful, I will meet my goals, and I am the impossible.
