Advisement Announcement

Why ASC Chat Lounge?

Why does this blog exist?

The Advisement Services Center has over 15 advisors that each have over 300 student advisees, not including the students we see from other departments. We have academic advisors, peer advisors, Pre-Law advisors, Pre-Health advisors, Advising Plus support services and more. During advance registration season, we collectively speak with over 350 students daily. That is a lot of talking. Still, so much is left unsaid.  There are so many things we want to share with and hear from our UAlbany students, faculty, staff,  our community neighbors, and our colleagues from other institutions. This medium allows us to better connect with all of you to the degree that you use it to interact with us!

“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble”.  – Yehuda Berg

Our blog is entitled the “ASC Chat Lounge” because we are inviting you to converse with us as you would with any friend in a cafe with very comfortable seating. Here, we share information regarding registration, new academic programs, support services, advisement updates, and events/programs offered by our office. We share UAlbany students’ personal stories and their musings via Project MyStory. We invite you (whoever you are reading this post) to share your story about your academic and professional journey because we believe that it will help and inspire other readers. We invite you to comment on our posts because we truly want to hear what you have to say.

This semester, we have several Project MyStory student bloggers who will be writing about gender bias in education, transitioning to college, self-actualization, studying abroad in NYC, being a non-traditional student, struggling, forming linkages through shared past experiences, and so much more. Our bloggers and our ASC Peer Advisors will facilitate several small group discussion and presentations in our office. Many exciting things are happening in our office.

Please visit this space often. Read and connect with us. We believe that we will all become better by our exchanges.

If you want to share your personal story, please e-mail Rachel Moody at rsmoody@albany.edu

Established in March 2015, Project MyStory is a community building effort to help students better acclimate to UAlbany and to work more effectively toward their goals. We began in UAlbany’s Academic Support Center (ASC), where you will see many of the posters featured above. We are now co-housed in ASC and in the Center for International Education and Global Strategy (CIEGS).
